Lelia M. M. Schleier (“Lia”) is an attorney in the firm’s Boca Raton office. Her current practice is focused in the area of life, health, and disability insurance, including ERISA. Prior to joining McDowell Hetherington, Lia worked at several prominent Florida law firms and has experience defending claims involving professional liability, insurance coverage, bad faith, property damage, general liability, as well as other casualty and commercial litigation claims. Lia has experience managing all pre- and post-trial phases of litigation, including providing litigation support and appellate services. She is also fluent in Spanish.

Lia received her Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law. While in law school, she served as the Senior Note and Comment Editor for the University of Iowa Journal of Transnational Law and Contemporary Problems and was a staff member in the University of Iowa’s Center for International Finance and Development, where she wrote and published on diverse topics concerning finance and development in Latin America and Europe. During law school, Lia served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Jose E. Martinez of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. She also interned as a prosecutor with the County Attorney’s Office for Washington County, Iowa.

Prior to law school, Lia worked as a medical and legal research consultant and assisted attorneys working on toxic torts and products liability cases. Lia attended graduate school at Brown University where she received a Master of Arts degree in English and advanced to the status of doctoral candidate. While at Brown, Lia taught courses in literary and cultural studies and academic writing and specialized in late 19th and early 20th century U.S. and Latin American hemispheric studies. She also was an Adjunct Professor at Bryant University and was elected to serve on The Nominating Committee of the Modern Language Association.

Lia graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English and History from the University of Miami and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.

Outside of the office, Lia enjoys attending concerts, comedy shows, and musicals with her husband, eating at restaurants that specialize in elevated comfort food, curling up with a good book, and going to the ballpark.
